CBD for Skin Care
The biggest question in the beauty world right now: how can I use CBD in my skin care routine?
CBD is claimed by many a marketer as a wonderdrug, a cure-all, and a panacea of the 21st century. We love CBD — don’t get us wrong. I’m a CBD journalist, and I use the stuff every day. But as a consumer (and health and wellness professional), I always want to be a tad skeptical before falling for the hype (I see you, fit tea). However, when it comes to CBD skin care cream, there may be some serious benefits — they just haven’t all been exhaustively studied just yet.
Certainly, much of this comes down to prohibition, sure. 80+ years of limitations on what can and can’t be studied when it comes to cannabis makes for very limited findings, particularly with things that are considered purely cosmetic like anti-aging. If a scientist is going to risk his license to study cannabis, it’s going to be for cancer or epilepsy, not for wrinkles. You know? That being said, we offer lots of CBD creams and lotions for YOU to try!
All of that said, there are TONS of CBD skin care products out there right now. And huge luxury skincare brands are starting to incorporate cannabis as a powerful ingredient into their elixirs and concoctions for the visage et décolletage. Très chic. BUT not all CBD beauty products are made the same. Here’s what we know.
CBD for Redness and Inflammation
Can CBD relieve skin redness and inflammation? It’s widely known that CBD and cannabis can relieve general inflammation. But CBD applied topically? It may, in fact, help calm dermal swelling as well. Transdermal (through skin) CBD has been and is currently being studied for its efficacy on inflammation, but it’s already known as a “novel anti-inflammatory,” ingredient.
CBD for Eczema and Skin Care for Psoriasis
What if you have a skin condition that’s a little more serious than general redness? Can CBD help eczema? What about psoriasis? As it turns out, there are some studies on this topic. One CBD study in 2007 was promising for psoriasis. “Results show that cannabinoids inhibit keratinocyte proliferation, and therefore support a potential role for cannabinoids in the treatment of psoriasis”
As for eczema, be mindful about the terpenes in your products. While CBD may be a treatment for your ailment, some reports (mostly anecdotal) have shared that certain terpenes agitate eczema. Terpenes aren’t just found in cannabis plants; linalool is a terpene found in lavender plants, limonene is found in citrus, pinene in pine trees (makes sense, right?). They’re found in cannabis, too. Just be mindful and talk to your dermatologist about CBD skincare products.
CBD for Acne
Guess what — CBD may help with acne, too! If you suffer from clogged pores (trust us, acne is much more than a cosmetic woe), CBD could potentially be an acne solution. A 2014 study reported: “our findings suggest that, due to the combined lipostatic, antiproliferative, and antiinflammatory effects, CBD for skin care with potential as a promising therapeutic agent for the treatment of acne vulgaris.”
CBD may potentially modulate the production of sebum, which causes acne. In addition, as you’ve already read, it can help with inflammation and redness. So, CBD could be a powerful anti-acne remedy.
CBD Skin Care for Anti-Aging
There are many claims being thrown around about CBD working as an anti-aging component, or using CBD for wrinkles. But is it legit? According to HealthLine, one dermatologist thinks it may be — but there aren’t studies on it yet. “Dr. Jeanette Jacknin, a California-based dermatologist […] said that cannabis may also be the next big thing in anti-aging skin care routines,” reports HealthLine.
Thanks to CBD’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, it may be more powerful than the beauty world’s favorite anti-aging ingredient, vitamin C. Here’s the thing: this is all deductive reasoning, right? There’s no one clinical trial with published, conclusive evidence. Nothing says “yes, for certain, CBD cures wrinkles and subtracts 20 years off your visible age.” But it also is a natural, gentle ingredient that may protect your skin from the elements while preventing aspects of aging to take their toll on your epidermis. Make sense?
